Basic Terms in Excel

For beginners to master financial analysis, they must first understand the basic Excel formulas. Microsoft Excel is widely regarded as the industry standard for data analysis software. Microsoft is one of the most popular companies among investment bankers and financial analysts in terms of data processing, financial modeling, and spreadsheets.

There are two main calculation methods in Excel: formulas and functions.

A formula is an expression that works with values in a cell(s). For example, =C1+C2 +C3 calculates the sum of the values in cells C1 through C3.

Functions are predefined formulas. They do away with the time-consuming manual entering of formulas by providing human-friendly names. For instance, the Function =SUM will command excel to add up all of the cells' values from C1 to C3.
